About Dr. Mohamed:

Dr. Shafi Mohamed is a highly experienced, board-certified surgeon specializing in cardiovascular, thoracic, and vascular surgery. He serves as the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at CHI St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Lufkin and brings a wealth of expertise to the Heart Institute of East Texas.

Dr. Mohamed has a distinguished record of leadership in developing advanced cardiac programs. He was instrumental in establishing one of the first structural heart programs in a community hospital setting at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and later directed a high-volume cardiothoracic program in Wichita Falls, managing all aspects of care. He has also successfully built thoracic oncology programs.

His extensive surgical skills cover the full spectrum of cardiothoracic and vascular care. This includes complex coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), intricate valve repair and replacement, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), emergency repairs for conditions like aortic dissection, advanced robotic thoracic surgery using the DaVinci 5 system (for lung resections, mediastinal tumors, etc.), carotid endarterectomy, peripheral vascular procedures, aneurysm repair, and complex lead extractions using laser technology.

Dr. Mohamed earned his medical degree and Master of Surgery from Stanley Medical College and achieved the University Gold Medal during his Thoracic Surgery postgraduate training in India. He completed further surgical training in the UK and his Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He is committed to lifelong learning and is currently completing his MBA in Health Care at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Mohamed previously served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Florida State University College of Medicine.
